How marketplace commissions work in India

Marketplaces charge sellers in three layers:

  1. Referral fee / commission — % of sale, varies by category. 8-30% range.
  2. Closing fee — flat ₹5-25 per item (Amazon-specific).
  3. Shipping fee — billed by weight + zone, usually ₹40-100 per shipment for sub-1kg.

Some marketplaces add a fixed fee per shipment, FBA/F-Assured storage rent, monthly subscriptions, ad spend (sponsored listings), and refund processing fees. The headline % isn't the full story.

Why is Meesho 0% commission?

Meesho earns from logistics + ad services rather than commission. Sellers ship via Meesho's network and pay shipping fees, but keep 100% of the product price. Margin maths is different — you trade commission for tighter shipping cost control.

Should I sell on marketplaces or build my own store?

Both. Marketplaces give discovery (90M+ shoppers); your own store gives margin (0% commission), customer data, and brand. Most successful Indian brands use marketplaces for top-of-funnel and their own store for repeat customers + premium SKUs. FlexiCommerce is built for the second piece.

Are FBA / F-Assured fees included here?

No. FBA (Amazon) and F-Assured (Flipkart) charge additional storage + pick-pack-ship fees on top of commission. Budget another 5-10% of sale value for fulfilment.
